The University of Petra is a Jordanian university located in Amman. It grants bachelor's and master's degrees. The university includes students from over 33 nationalities from Arab and foreign countries. The university is located in a prime location on the airport road and is distinguished by its green campus and modern university facilities, including workshops, laboratories, studios, and studios, providing students with high-level practical education and preparing them for the local and global job market. The university also provides fully equipped dormitories for female students, covering all the services they might need.

About the University[edit]

The university was established in 1991.[1] Its first class graduated in 1994 and was then called the "Jordan University for Girls" since in its policy, it was adopted to be a university dedicated to girls. However, the name was changed to University of Petra in 1999 for its new policy of allowing male students to join it.

The university offers a variety of programs at its nine faculties. Arabic is used for teaching of humanities, and English is used as the teaching medium in most of the other disciplines. The nine faculties are:

Green University[edit]

In 2015, the University of Petra switched to a solar energy system, generating a total of 1.5 megawatts of electricity from solar energy.

The university's energy consumption on campus in 2012 was 3,066,631 kilowatt-hours. This consumption decreased to 2,886,705 kilowatt-hours in 2013, and further reduced to 2,306,845 kilowatt-hours in 2014 due to changes in lighting fixtures.

The university has its own artesian well, where the water is treated to make it suitable for the intended purposes, especially for drinking. The well supplies the university with all its water needs.

Additionally, the university has a wastewater treatment plant that fully treats the water, providing the necessary water for irrigation.

The campus is pedestrian-friendly to encourage walking among staff and students. Buses and cars are only allowed on the ring road for entry and exit purposes.

There is a multi-story parking structure near the entrance gate to accommodate 1,000 vehicles for students and staff. Moreover, there are parking spaces next to the faculties for quick access.

Energy Conservation Program
The University of Petra is committed to being proactive and innovative in protecting and improving the local and global environment. The university's policy is to reduce energy consumption wherever possible through the actions and efforts of faculty members, staff, and students by closing doors, turning off lights, and generally making positive efforts to conserve energy through the installation of energy-saving lamps and devices. The University of Petra is a local leader in utilizing solar energy.

Water Conservation Program
The University of Petra is committed to reducing water consumption. The university encourages the reuse of water and wastewater, significantly contributing to the irrigation process within the campus.

Recycling Program
The University of Petra is committed to environmental protection through an effective waste management program. Waste management efforts include recycling, which is an important activity that helps conserve resources and land space and reduces waste disposal costs. The university uses both sides of the paper instead of buying packaging products that quickly turn into waste and reduces consumption by avoiding printing emails or web pages.

Transportation Policy
The University of Petra employs strategies to reduce transportation costs by limiting driving. The university operates free buses within the campus and provides a variety of transportation options and free parking for students and faculty members. The parking structure accommodates 1,000 vehicles.[citation needed]

The University has about 287 teaching staff members, and the majority of which are Jordanians, but there are International lecturers from different countries.[citation needed]

Students are assisted to adapt to University life and culture by the Deanship of Student Affairs (DSA) and their academic advisors. UOP provides transportation services for students for a nominal fee.[citation needed]

Research[edit]

The Deanship of Graduate Studies and Research is the Center of the research activities at UOP. It is formed of two councils; One for research activities and the other for graduate programs. In accordance with the accreditation criteria, stipulated by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, 5% of each university's budget is allocated to support research activities.
