    Feature request: hover-over previews non-mainspace shortcuts[edit]

    It would be helpful if when you hover over WP:UP, it tells you "Wikipedia:User pages". For WP:NOTHERE, "Clearly not being here to build an encyclopedia". Just the headings would be so helpful. Even as someone who's not new, I've encountered many new shortcuts when reading WP-space articles / seeing admins quote various policies. I have to click & open them every time, even the ones I've just forgotten. Imagine how much more helpful that could be for new users.

    (edit conflict) @AtikaAtikawa: If you mean an ordinary user page, then use the template {{Db-U1}}. That will place you into the category of users who have pages in their userspace they wish to be deleted by a patrolling admin. If, however, you are referring to your user talk page, then you do not delete them. Per WP:DETALK: User talk pages and user talk archives created by page move are generally not deleted; they are usually needed for reference by other users. For example, if a user has a talk page full of advice and warnings—albeit seemingly ignored—from several experienced Wikipedians, including administrators, deleted page notices, as well as an arbitration enforcement block against them for all to see, then it is important these are kept in the page history for future reference, in the case, for example, of recidivism.     I can't help but notice that User:Christophervincent01 has some, well, concerning userboxes on their user page. There are multiple uses of a flag associated with Islamic terrorism. There is a declaration that This user recognizes the US as a terrorist state. Combined with the fact that they have a self-declared "nom de guerre" of "Abu Muhsin al-Malabari" (note the obvious similarity to Abu Muhsin al-Masri), this seems like something that should probably be clarified.     A fake offer for a wikipedia entry[edit]

    A person purportedly representing "The WIKI editors" took a payment from me with the promise to create a wikipedia page. I was told this would help my book sales as a complement to the information already provided by Cambridge University Press and Amazon. I forwarded a CV and a list of publications--books, journal articles, and popular press commentary. After much back and forth, I was told that a wikipedia page was up. But no such page exists. The person with whom I was interacting--Leo Price, ostensibly representing the wiki editors -- has failed to respond to subsequent emails. Is there any way to report this behavior to a legitimate authority and stop further abuse? I might add that I am an annual contributor to the wikimedia foundation.     What you appear to be describing is quite possibly fraud. In which case, the 'legitimate authority' to report this to is your local law enforcement. Per Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Scam warning, you should probably also email paid-en-wp@wikipedia.org, though there is generally little we can do about it. Sadly, such dubious practices are far from uncommon, and the best advice we can give is to take any external claims to 'represent' Wikipedia, or indeed to have any control over article content at all, as the BS it clearly is.     @Leslielipschitz: Several points:
    • It appears that you've been scammed, and you're hardly the first. See WP:SCAM.
    • While having a Wikipedia article on oneself can help one's visibility, it's not always a good thing, and promotion is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia.
    • Contributions to WMF, while appreciated, have no effect on Wikipedia's content, nor should they.
    • As Andy notes above, your best recourse would probably to be to your local law enforcement. It's unlikely that there would be much which can be done by anyone here.

    Thanks. It is useful to know that there was such an entry that was submitted by a blocked user. It must have been these people as I don't know of anyone else who would have submitted it. For years colleagues who have wikipedia pages have asked why I don't have one. It never really interested me. But after writing my last book (for Cambridge University Press) I thought it may be time to have an entry--not really so much for promotional purposes but because there seemed to be a slew of readers of the book--and of my Barron's articles--keen to know more about me.     If readers of your work want to know more about you, they should get that information from a personal website or social media. Those things you can exclusively control, you can't do that with a Wikipedia article. 331dot (talk) 19:23, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    From a cursory websearch, it appears to me likely that you are "Wikipedia:Notable" in our specialised use of that term, and would therefore qualify for a Wikipedia article.
    If someone with no personal or professional connection to you chose to write one, based mostly on material published by disinterested secondary WP:Reliable sources and in accordance with Wikipedia's WP:Citation and other policies, including those pertaining to WP:Biographies of living persons, it would likely be accepted (regardless of your wishes).
    Most BLP articles are thus written by volunteer contributors. A small proportion are written by people with connections to the subject (a WP:Conflict of interest), but it is very difficult for most such people to be able to write with the necessary detatchment and WP:Neutral point of view, though it isn't forbidden.
    Equally, it is not forbidden for someone paid by a subject to write an article about them, but the vast majority of would-be WP:Paid "professional" contributors lack the skills and the knowledge of Wikipedia requirements necessary, and (as you have seen) are scammers promising things that they cannot do and that are often contrary to Wikipedia's rules and operating procedures.

    The page history [1] of Thomas Kingston shows it has always redirected to Lady Gabriella Kingston. A page at Draft:Thomas Kingston has been deleted twice.     unable to edit the page Ship prefix[edit]

    I am trying to add a prefix to the list of ship prefixes at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_prefix but whenever I try to publish the edit I get blocked with the message "As an anti-abuse measure, you are limited from performing this action too many times in a short space of time, and you have exceeded this limit. Please try again in a few minutes." but I can never try again and am not doing this repeatedly, I have tried to publish the edit a few times in the last month, any idea what's going on here? or how I might solve this issue?     iOS app only shows syntax editor[edit]

    Hello! I just got the iOS app. From what I can see online, there’s supposed to be a sort of visual editor for it. But all I’m getting is the source editor (with some colored text). How can I fix this? Zanahary (talk) 01:06, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    @Zanahary: I'm not aware of a visual editor feature in the iOS app. Where did you see it? Maybe it was not about the iOS app but about editing the mobile version of Wikipedia using VisualEditor in the normal Safari browser in iOS. You can see it in a browser at https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example#/editor/all after clicking the pencil icon at the top right and select "Visual editing" (it may already be selected).     @Zanahary: It looks like a misleading caption. The image is https://wikimediafoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/The-new-editing-Interface-on-the-Wikipedia-iOS-app.png. It has four screenshots. The first is not from an editor as far as I can tell. It's just the rendered article. You can mark something and select "Edit" but it merely starts a source editor for the page with the same text marked in the source, assuming it's actually present in the source. And the source editor may mark another occurence of the text than you. The first screenshot shows "post-industrial waterfront" marked but it isn't even marked in the second screenshot although the text is visible. Maybe the screenshot isn't intend to show this mark feature, or maybe it's a newer feature. The story is from 2019. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:48, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    How to disable Expand all sections?[edit]

    Hello. When I view Wikipedia pages while I am logged out I can see pages along with expand option on individual section. When I log with my account in browse on my phone, it by default expands all sections. This is pretty inconvenient.     @Krutarth: There is an "Expand all sections" setting when you click the three line menu at the upper left of the page while you are browsing the mobile Wikipedia site.     Thank you for the help. I couldn't see the settings option itself, there was just preference option. Turned out it was because I was using en.wiki rather than en.m.wiki. The settings option, and inturn the expand section option is visible only on en.m.wiki domain.

    If I click edit and preview a revision in the page history with the error message then the error goes away. I don't know why it happens and it's difficult to investigate when the same revision keeps displaying differently and never gives an error in preview.     Notability of peers[edit]

    I am sure I have read guidance somewhere on the notability of members of the peerage. I have a vague memory it was an issue Jimmy Wales offered an opinion on. There are a couple of peers I’m interested in, one living one dead, but I don’t think they have done/did much in their lives that would ordinarily indicate notability. Nor do they have much coverage. But their peerages have articles, and I think they may therefore have notability merely by virtue of being, e.g. the 8th Marquess of Compton Bassett. Can anyone remember the relevant guidance?     As a practical matter, articles of this type usually have an infobox that includes links to their predecessor and successor in their title. This allows easy navigation forwards and backwards through the title holders, but if one of them has no article, the method fails (though others exist), while even a stub article preserves it.     It seems to me that notability is not inherited is relevant here. If you can find sources that meet GNG, that's fine, but if not (eg, the only sources you can find give routine information about a peer, "X, the seventh earl of W, was the nephew of the sixth earl, married Y, and had two children, one of whom became the eighth earl"), then your suggestion above, they may therefore have notability merely by virtue of being, e.g. the 8th Marquess of Compton Bassett would in my view by refuted by that page.     Huge whitespace at top of US state articles[edit]

    Hello. At New Mexico and New York (state) (and probably others) there is a huge whitespace at the top of the article, caused by "state symbols" template on the right, below the infobox.     Arthur's Seat and other locations in Edinburgh[edit]

    Author Jude Stringfellow has mentioned Arthur's Seat and other locations in Edinburgh and Scotland in her novels. They are available on Amazon. One is even called "Edinburgh". She wrote "Of Kilted Pleasure" as well, and "Murder Book" as well as "Pinball" take place in Scotland.     All her books appear to be self-published. Since anyone can self-publish a book and sell it on Amazon she is unlikely to merit a Wikipedia aticle, unless she has multiple significant coverage in reliable and independent sources.     I am trying to find the list of minor planets named after animals and plants. I have used it before in the past but I cannot find it anymore, it apparently no longer exists. 1) What happened to it? 2) Why was it taken down? 3) When will it be restored?     Merge draft article and redirect[edit]

    You can edit the redirect page to remove its target, and post the content of your draft there. You should also place Template:Main under the subsection heading of the redirect target, in this case SpongeBob SquarePants (film series)#Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie (2024), to link to the new article.     I wanted to add my book 'Happy as Larry: A New York Story fo CUlts, Crushes and Quaaludes' ISBN 978-1726658393 to the Saul Newton page since my book touches on my personal experience with the Sullivanian cult. Why was it removed and what can I do to rectify this?

    You can start by reading Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. If your book merits discussion in the Saul Newton page, it will be because independent published reliable sources have discussed it in relation to Newton. A Quick Google search doesn't come up with anything obvious (note that 'reviews' written by book retailers etc aren't independent, since they sell the book, and thus have a stake in promoting it). If you can find some in-depth coverage of your book from an acceptable source, start a discussion on the article talk page, where we can assess it and decide whether it merits inclusion.     To add to the above, I now see that your book is apparently a work of fiction, though possibly based on Newton's 'cult'.     Hello. The answer to "Why does Wikipedia not have an article about X" is usually one or both of:
    1. Because nobody has written one, or
    2. Because X does not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability.
    If 2. holds then an article is not possible. If it does not, then an article is possible, but will only exist if some volunteer has chosen to write it.
    I am dubious that the article Wilburt S. Brown is adequately sourced to demonstrate that he meets those criteria, because I'm not sure that any of the sources cited is truly independent.     Leaving aside the issue of whether or not Wilburt S. Brown is notable, I think that it is fairly obvious that a two star general in the US military is much more likely to be notable than a lieutenant. There are occasional exceptions, of course, but in the end, it all comes down to the depth of coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the person in question. Audie Murphy, for example, also only reached the rank of lieutenant during his active service during World War II, but he was the subject of massive coverage because of his conspicuous heroism in combat. And most of his accomplishments were as an ordinary enlisted soldier, not as an officer. It is all about the extent of the coverage in reliable, independent sources.     My account is "lost"[edit]

    Hi, I have an issue. I have created my wiki account very long time ago. The old e-mail is not working anymore, so I am not able to reset the password. The password got changed in 2016 by Wikipedia mass password resets (because many passwords were compromised). I would like to access my old account and continue working with it. But how? Who can fix my e-mail address in the account? How can I open a ticket for wikipedia support?

    I'm afraid that if you no longer have the password or access to that email address, then there is no way to recover the account. I suggest you create a new one, and edit the user page of both the new account and the old one to say that they are the same person, and why there are two.     how to set languages i want in suggested languages?[edit]

    Hi! I'm a relatively new user, and recently I went into a bit of a deep dive into some topics which required me to look across multiple language versions of the same page.

    Now, I have an overwhelming amount of suggested languages when I want to switch the language. Is there a way to set the languages I speak so I can easily access them? For clarity, I would like to set my languages to English, Hebrew, and Simple English, without having languages like Hungarian or Italian (and about 20 others) appear in the suggested languages menu.

    Also, I use Wikipedia from my phone a lot, so i use the mobile version on it, which is drastically more convenient than the desktop version (when using a phone). The problem is that it makes the autocomplete for certain articles I read a lot direct to en.m.wikipedia instead of en.wikipedia, so it is less convenient on my desktop.

    Is there a way to stop my browser from going to the mobile version instead of the desktop version? (instead of manually editing the URL or scrolling to switch to the desktop view).

    On the desktop version, the languages that you've frequently switch to would be placed on the top of the language sidebar (assuming ccorresponding articles do exist in those languages). I think something similar might exist on the mobile website version but can't be certain. As for the second question, on the very bottom of each Wikipedia webpage there would be a tool bar, the ones with "term of use" and other options, and you can click/tap on the last one that says "mobile view" or "desktop" to switch to the other version.     Deleted article[edit]

    I tried to post an article, and it got deleted based on Wiki's U5 ("Pages in userspace consisting of writings, information, discussions, or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals, where the owner has made few or no edits outside of user pages..."). However, I am not sure why it got deleted, as I did include many references and links to other sites and articles. My article was about a person, who I did get permission to write about.     Hi Lisacourtnadge. Even though trying to create an article on one's user page is a mistake that's commonly made and isn't something explicity prohibitted by Wikipedia's user page policy, such content is often mistaken for a fake article or being otherwise inappropriate for a user page; so, the page often ends up being tagged ans subsequently deleted per speedy deletion criterion U5. For this reason, it's generally better to work on drafts for articles in the draft namespace or as a userspace draft instead. What you can try doing is posting a message on the user talk page of the administrator who deleted the page, explain you were working on a draft for an article, and ask them to restore it either as a draft or a userspace draft. Since I'm not an administrator, I can't see what was deleted, but the deleting adminsitrator would probably be willing to restore it unless it was so hopeless or so filled with serious violations of relevant Wikipedia policies that restoring the page wouldn't be allowed or would otherwise be pointless to do so. If that's the case, you may have no alternative but to start again.
    Finally, you don't need the permission of the subject to try and create a Wikipedia article about them, but you do need to clearly be able to establish that the subject meets Wikipedia:Notability because only subjects deemed to be Wikipedia notable can have stand-alone articles written about them. Given that the subject you want to create an article about is a person, you should take a look at Wikipedia:Notability (people) and Wikipedia:Notability (academics) for reference. You will need to first self-assess this person to see whether the meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines because nobody is going to be able to create an article about them without being able to establish that they do. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:26, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
