Novak Djokovic was the defending champion, but withdrew from the quarterfinals due to a knee injury.[1] He was vying for a record-extending 25th major singles title, and to become the first man to complete a quadruple career Grand Slam.[2] With his win over Francisco Cerúndolo in the fourth round, Djokovic marked his 370th major win and reached his 59th major quarterfinal, surpassing both of Roger Federer's all-time records.[3] His third-round match with Lorenzo Musetti also marked the latest finish in tournament history, ending at 3:06 a.m. local time.[4][5] Djokovic's withdrawal guarantees a first-time French Open champion, and will mark the first French Open final without a member of the Big Three since 2004.

Due to Djokovic's withdrawal, Jannik Sinner will attain the ATP No. 1 singles ranking at the end of the tournament, becoming the first Italian singles player, male or female, to claim the top spot.[6]

This was the first time since the 2005 Australian Open that Rafael Nadal was unseeded in a major, and the first time he was unseeded at the French Open. Nadal used an injury protected ranking to enter the tournament.[7] He lost to Alexander Zverev in the first round, marking the first time Nadal lost his opening match at the French Open,[8] lost consecutive matches on clay, and only the second time he lost his opening match at a clay court tournament since the 2008 Italian Open against Juan Carlos Ferrero.[9]

Grigor Dimitrov became the second player born in the 1990s (after Daniil Medvedev) to complete the career set of both Grand Slam and Masters quarterfinals, and the sixth active player overall (after Djokovic, Nadal, Andy Murray, Marin Čilić and Medvedev) to accomplish the feat.[10][11] Alex de Minaur became the first Australian man to reach the French Open quarterfinals since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004.
