Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Based Kashmiri! Your additions to Gupta conquests of Bengal have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source. You must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. Read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Our policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 13:03, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your correction. However, I did not directly copy-paste it from the source; I rewrote it in a different format. Will this also be considered copyright infringement? Based Kashmiri (talk) 17:07, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your addition was flagged as a potential copyright issue and was assessed by myself. Here is a link to the CopyPatrol report. Click on the iThenticate link to view what was found by the detection service. You can see for yourself why we would consider it to be a violation of our copyright policy. — Diannaa (talk) 18:42, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sourced content removal on Bhulua Kingdom[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Ixudi. I noticed that you recently removed content without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Ixudi (talk) 19:35, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've already given the reason for my edit. You can check the sources yourself. The first and second sources don't mention them as Rajputs of Mithila and for the third reference check WP:RAJ. Based Kashmiri (talk) 08:41, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You removed all mentions of Mithila which were clearly mentioned in the reliable sources. I actually removed the Rajput mention as well however it is curious why you chose to remove reliable sources and all the mentions of Mithila. Please discuss on talk page before making bold changes. Ixudi (talk) 08:44, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't intend to remove content that suggests they migrated from Mithila. My intention was only to remove the mention of them being Rajputs in that article. The first reference doesn't refer to them as Rajputs, and the second citation itself specifies that they were Kayasthas, not Rajputs. And for the third reference I've already provided the reason. Regarding deletion of an article or moving it to back to draft space:[edit]

Hi, I wish to propose deletion/back to draft space for article List of battles involving the Maratha Confederacy as;

It is currently incomplete and seems to be written from a biased perspective. There are numerous inaccuracies in the table, such as the outcomes of the Pavankhind and 1st Surat battles, which contradict established sources. Additionally, several key battles are not mentioned. The terminology used is also misleading, with the Mughal Empire being referred to as Hindostan. By this logic, should we rename the Mauryan Empire as Hindostan, or the Roman Empire as Italy, or the Ottoman Empire as Turkey? Also in Capture of Delhi 1771, etc. mughal empire is shown alongside Marathas which isn't true. These issues need to be addressed before the article can be considered ready for Wikipedia.

I don't know how to propose it for deletion/ draft space so I require your help for this.

Do you mean that you want to nominate this article for deletion? Based Kashmiri (talk) 15:40, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I mean to say that,
If it's possible then move to draft space and then add information with correct results, remove wrong information, etc. and then display it as a wiki article.
Else delete for the moment. Mohammad Umar Ali (talk) 15:54, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This article is very old and I am unsure of who created it. It is written poorly, with errors in the names of opponents and results but i think we can't nominate deletion for it as per WP:DEL-REASON
Instead of deleting the article, I can help you in improving it. You can also ask a more experienced editor your questions at Wikipedia:Teahouse.
You cannot move this to drafts as per WP:DONTDRAFTIFY, but you can still make edits to improve the article. Based Kashmiri (talk) 16:17, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok then I will try to improve it. Thnx for helping. Mohammad Umar Ali (talk) 16:21, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A little help[edit]

Hi,

Could you please verify the article Nizam's Carnatic campaign (1725-27) RESULT. I have checked Raid on Delhi 1737 result and sources failed to prove Mughal victory so I changed the result subsequently and added information in the article. Even this Carnatic campiagn article looks similar to me like Delhi one so it would be a great help if you check it out. You could even check more sources regarding result of the overall Carnatic campaign and suggest it to me.

Removing sources[edit]

May you please stop removing sources from Ganda Singh and Gupta from pages about Sikh battles. Wikipedia does allow for the use of secondary sources which may be older, but still secondary. The rules state newer sources information should be given priority. Not that older sources should be omitted. @Southasianhistorian8@Twarikh e Khalsa If you two can help chime in I would appreciate it. CanadianSingh1469 (talk) 19:59, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@CanadianSingh1469 what sources did this editor remove from the Authors Gupta and Ganda Singh? Twarikh e Khalsa (talk) 20:05, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ganda Singh’s Life Of Banda Singh Bahadur Based On Contemporary And Original Records
Gupta’s History of Sikhs CanadianSingh1469 (talk) 20:08, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Based Kashmiri @CanadianSingh1469 @Southasianhistorian8 I have no idea why you removed Hari Ram Guptas source. The most recent edition of Guptas work is from 1978. Hari Ram Gupta did multiple revisions of history of the sikhs, and in each revision, he included additonal information and fixed factual errors/mistakes from the previous renditons. The work by Gupta you removed was an edition from 1978, which means it fully acceptable to use on wikipedia. Twarikh e Khalsa (talk) 20:13, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Based Kashmiri @CanadianSingh1469 @Southasianhistorian8
As for Ganda Singh, although his work was published during the raj era, he's ultimately well known historian when it comes to writing about Sikh History. Ganda Singh's works aren't only exclusive to the raj era as he's also published a biography on Ahmad Shah Abdali during the 1950s. Twarikh e Khalsa (talk) 20:17, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Based Kashmiri @CanadianSingh1469
I also feel like you are misinterpreting on what WP:RAJ actually means. WP:RAJ is largely against sources published during the British era that primarily focus on caste related topics. Ganda Singhs work isn't on the topic of caste but rather on a historical figure such as Banda Singh. Countless modern day historians have based a lot of their research on Banda Singh largely due to the works published by Ganda Singh. Like i mentioned before, Ganda Singh was a very influential historian who's done extensive research on Sikh history both in the pre and post independence eras of south asia. His work therfore is reliable enough to be used on wikipedia. Twarikh e Khalsa (talk) 20:24, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CanadianSingh1469 and @Twarikh e Khalsa please see WP:AGE MATTERS. We should not be using older and RAJ sources when there are multiple new options.
Coming to Ganda Singh's who is a "well known historian". That said we could use Jadunath's works as he's also a well known military historiographer, but we can't. Please go to WP:RSN for further queries or you can directly ask about it to Sitush and ActivelyDisinterested. Based.Kashmiri (🗨️) 05:53, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding Hari Ram Gupta and Ganda Singh, some of their works which are cited in Wikipedia were written between 1935-1947, while this isn't ideal and is somewhat of a diminishing factor, I still think both of them are fine as they are prominent historians whose careers and bibliographies on Sikh history spanned decades. Obviously, we should give them less wight compared to a modern publication, but I think they are still somewhat reliable. Southasianhistorian8 (talk) 10:48, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've no idea what the specifics are here, and I'm only offering advice (I'm not a subject matter expert in the area). Although it's true that age matters, it matters when newer sources have outdated them. Old sources shouldn't be discounted out of hand. Raj era sources (works that were published during the Raj) may have dubious takes on caste and historical matters. But if you want have specific question they should be asked on WP:RSN. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested «@» °∆t° 10:54, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, could you please stop going and reverting every edit made by DeepstoneV and all edits made after his edits by other users? I'm aware of WP:BANREVERT, but not all his edits were in violation of the block, and many were constructive and good edits. In the wording of the policy, it says "This does not mean that edits must be reverted just because they were made by a banned editor (changes that are obviously helpful, such as fixing typos or undoing vandalism, can be allowed to stand)". Thank you. Flemmish Nietzsche (talk) 07:02, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks for correcting me. [1] Based.Kashmiri (🗨️) 07:12, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Based Kashmiri Additionally, on the article Gunpowder weapons in the Bahmani Sultanate, you reverted my edit of taking down the speedy deletion nomination, however I still don't think it falls under G5 — on the policy page it says "When a blocked or banned person uses an alternate account (sockpuppet) to avoid a restriction, any pages created via the sock account after the earliest block or ban of any of that person's accounts qualify for G5 (if not substantially edited by others)." The thing is, the sockmaster AdityaNakul was not blocked until yesterday, and thus Deepstone's edits, event though he is a sock, were prior to any other block or ban and thus were not in violation of any block or ban. If you think this reasoning is incorrect, feel free to correct me, but you can't revert or delete all of Deepstone's edits or created pages. Flemmish Nietzsche (talk) 20:43, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Flemmish Nietzsche I reverted your edit because of the Ivanvector's stance on the socks block, please see this. I hope our confusion will end there. Thanks. Based.Kashmiri (🗨️) 05:46, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that, however with the speedy deletion question he did not answer your question on his talk page, so I don't see your point here. You can go ahead with reverting any of the socks, including Deepstone's edits, and as I said just make sure to only revert the edits by the sock and not the intermediate succeeding edits, but wait for now with nominating for speedy deletion any more articles until this can be cleared up.
