Zain Khalpey (born in Zimbabwe) is an American cardiothoracic surgeon, medical innovator, and professor known for his pioneering work in robotic cardiac surgery, artificial intelligence in medicine, and organ regeneration. He currently serves as the Director of Robotic Cardiac Surgery and Director of Artificial Heart, Mechanical Circulatory Support, and Extracorporeal Life Support at HonorHealth in Scottsdale, Arizona. Khalpey has made significant contributions to the fields of cardiothoracic surgery, xenotransplantation, and regenerative medicine through his research, innovations, and clinical work.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Khalpey received his M.B., B.S. (Hons) degree from the University of London in 1998, where he was the valedictorian of his class.[1] In 1995, he earned a B.Sc. (Hons) in Pathology, graduating summa cum laude from the University of London.[1] Khalpey completed his Ph.D. in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Bioenergetics and Cardiac Transplantation at Imperial College London in 2012.[1] His doctoral research was conducted in collaboration with the University of Gdansk, Mayo Clinic, and Harvard University.[1]
Medical Training[edit]
Khalpey underwent clinical training and residencies in the United Kingdom from 1998 to 2003.[1] He completed an integrated residency in General & Cardiothoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School from 2005 to 2012.[1] In 2012, Khalpey pursued an Advanced Heart Failure & Mechanical Circulatory Support Fellowship at Columbia University.[1]
Academic Appointments[edit]
Khalpey has held several academic appointments throughout his career. From 2012 to the present, he has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Columbia University.[1] Between 2013 and 2018, he was an Associate Professor of Surgery and other departments at Banner University Medical Center.[1] Currently, Khalpey serves as the Director of Robotic Cardiac Surgery and Director of Artificial Heart, Mechanical Circulatory Support, and Extracorporeal Life Support at HonorHealth in Scottsdale, Arizona.[1]
Clinical Work and Innovations[edit]
Khalpey is known for his pioneering work in robotic cardiac surgery and the application of artificial intelligence in medicine.[2] He has served as the director of various cardiothoracic surgery programs and has performed innovative procedures such as the first North American 50cc Total Artificial Heart implant.[3]
